The third biennial meeting of the North American Fichte Society was held March 15–19, 1995, at the Historic Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, just outside Lexington, Kentucky, on the theme: “200 Years of Wissenschaftslehre.” The local organizer was Daniel Breazeale of the University of Kentucky. The conference program included 27 papers, most of which were dedicated to Fichte’s Grundlage der gesamten Wissenschaftslehre. Not surprisingly, several of these papers touched upon the issue of Hegel’s relation to Fichte. In (...) addition to many fine papers and discussions, memorable aspects of the meeting included the beautiful rural setting around Shakertown and an excellent banquet at Fred and Ed’s Desert Moon Restaurant. ABSTRACT This article, a version of which was presented in January 2020 to the North American Nietzsche Society at the American Philosophical Association Eastern Division Meeting, is a commentary on Andrew Huddleston's 2019 monograph, Nietzsche on the Decadence and Flourishing of Culture. While praising Huddleston's balancing of systematic and critical scholarship, the article also takes up the wider framework in which Nietzsche's contribution should be understood and the possible limitations to his philosophical contribution.

ABSTRACT This article, invited for presentation to the North American Nietzsche Society at the 2020 Pacific Division Meeting of the American Philosophical Association, is a commentary on Mark Alfano's 2019 monograph, Nietzsche's Moral Psychology. It critically discusses Alfano's synoptic digital humanities approach and examines the efficacy of two aspects of his argument about Nietzsche's philosophy developed using this methodology: the connection between life and will to power, and the role of speech acts.

The rapidly changing field of genetics affects society through advances in health-care and through implications of genetic research. This study addresses the impacts of new genetic discoveries and technologies on different segments of today's society. The book begins with a chapter on genetic complexity, and subsequent chapters discuss moral and ethical questions arising from today's genetics from the perspectives of health care professionals, the media, the general public, special interest groups and commercial interests.

I commend Alfano's productive, innovative use of digital humanities methods as well as his more traditional textual interpretation. But I raise some doubts about Alfano's proposed criterion of “external integration” for a drive to qualify as a Nietzschean virtue: the claim (...) that if a drive systematically and reliably meets with condemnation from an agent's community, it cannot be a virtue. I suggest that the criterion be amended either so that it is disapproval from the agent's true community, which for a solitary moral innovator may be an imagined community of past and future peers, that disqualifies a drive from virtue status; or so that community disapproval is disqualifying only if the agent internalizes it. Kant and the Concept of Community, edited by Charlton Payne and Lucas Thorpe, gathers together some of the best known figures in contemporary Kant scholarship. This fine collection traces Kant’s concept of community from its Precritical roots to its role in The Critique of Pure Reason, before going on to investigate the subsequent transformations it would undergo in Kant’s later works on ethics, religion, history, politics, and aesthetics. With very few exceptions, all of the essays in this collection are interesting (...) and informative, with signature pieces by Béatrice Longuenesse, Paul Guyer, Allen Wood, Onora O’Neill, and Susan Shell. This is a highly recommended collection suitable for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and professionals. (shrink)

The North American Nietzsche Society held the first of its stand-alone conferences at Hunter College’s Roosevelt House in New York City on October 14–17, 2016. The three-day event featured invited keynotes by Bernard Reginster, Christopher Janaway, and Beatrix Himmelmann. In addition, the program committee selected seven blind-reviewed abstracts from a pool of over sixty submissions. Based on the film “Dead Poets Society”, the article points out the chaos created within the traditional North American school Welton through the work of Professor John Keating in the establishment of new teaching and learning methods for literature, as it tends to to encourage the questioning about the meaning and value of life and the cultivation of oneself as a possibility of producing a new and extemporaneous content and knowledge as an affirmation of the forces of (...) life. Thus, based on Friedrich Nietzsche's critique of “historical culture” as a product of the contradiction involving life and culture, the article emphasizes that the knowledge that has roots in “historical culture” is characterized as an unproductive capital, signaling the inexistence of rights of Philosophy between historical culture and the formative-educational process and the need for a correlation between art and philosophy before science and truth. Therefore, opposing the transformation of philosophy into erudition in the name of "historical culture" and the "philosophers" who place themselves at its service, Nietzsche denounces the reduction of being, life and vision to the framework of concepts, opinions, pasts, books in a critical analysis that focuses on the question involving philosophy professors between life and the science of universal becoming: philosophers or servers of “history”? This essay examines the relationship between the display of non-human animal trophies and masculinity through an analysis of progressive-era American wildlife photography. In the 1890s, North American animal photographers began circulating their images in sporting journals and describing their practice as a form of hunting. These camera hunters exhibited their photographs as proof of sportsmanship, virility, and hunting prowess.

PurposeThe main goals of this study are identifying the information needs of new North American immigrants to Israel and to ascertain which channels of information are used by the immigrants before and after immigration to try to satisfy their information needs.Design/methodology/approachA qualitative research approach was used for this study. Qualitative interviews were implemented as the primary strategy for data with the application of the grounded theory method for analysis.FindingsGeneral information needs categories included: housing, schooling, health, banking and finances, (...) drivers licenses, government‐related issues, legal issues and practical information. Personal information needs related to problems of “split” or prior immigration, changing over professional licenses, starting a business, children with special needs, and alternative medicine. Many of these needs were satisfied either prior to immigration or during the absorption process while others were left open leaving the immigrants with gaps in their knowledge, feelings of uncertainty and, at times, anxiety. During the preparations for immigration the greatest source of information came from the internet. After immigration, during the absorption process, word‐of‐mouth and personal contacts were the main sources for the immigrants to satisfy their information needs.Research limitations/implicationsAdditional research regarding immigration and immigrants from all different backgrounds is needed. Such research will help us learn more about other specific group's information needs and information seeking behavior.Practical implicationsBy learning and studying the information needs of immigrant's governments and immigration organizations can have a better understanding of how to assist immigrants have a successful integration into their new society.Originality/valueProspective immigrants, governments and immigration organizations can gain a deeper understanding of immigrant information needs and the channels used to satisfy those needs. Three papers included in this issue were presented to the North American Nietzsche Society (NANS) in San Francisco during the Pacific Division Meeting of the American Philosophical Association. Participants were invited by the NANS program committee to address the theme, “Nietzsche and Antiquity.” The session, held on March 31, 2010 and chaired by R. Postcolonial theory ought to inform how we do Christian social ethics in North America. This essay engages postcolonial critiques of the "impossibility" that intellectuals can address the needs of unrepresented groups. It also examines postcolonial theorists' move to localize European thinking and, in so doing, to recognize European thinking as both "indispensable and inadequate" to justice-oriented work. The essay engages contemporary post-colonial theory with the writing and work of Howard Thurman, William Stuart Nelson, and Bayard Rustin, midcentury black (...) class='Hi'>American Christian intellectuals, in order to show how postcolonial theory may be useful for contemporary Christian social ethics.
